New Floating World

2015
Cloth, thread, wood
$2500

Since making this piece, I have become aware of the potential offense that the caricatured nature of the figure might elicit. I have long been inspired by Japanese art and fabric; In creating it, I was inspired both by Japanese prints of the floating world (Ukiyo-e), and the forms of Japanese scrolls. It includes both vintage (the background cloth) and more recent cloth sourced in Japan (the face from a 1970s Japanese scarf visible in the process images below), as well as a handmade Barbie Doll negligée and stockings, 1950s fabric from India (the parasol), and contemporary commercial fabric with flying monkeys from Wizard of Oz. For now, I have left it on my website with my process and feelings about it, and I am not exhibiting it.
