Isola (Detail) by Janie Cohen

This is constructed of some of my favorite fabric pieces that I had saved over the years, and some more recently acquired. When I had sewn them together, the color palette, forms, and qualities of the fabrics brought to mind a northern Italian landscape: specifically, a lakeside town or lake island. After doing a little online travel, I found its location -- Isola di San Giulio: a small, inhabited island in Lake Orta in Piedmont, Northwestern Italy, home to the Basilica San Giulio.

The cloth that comprises this piece, clockwise beginning upper left: tie-dyed cloth, used drop cloth; Japanese dusting cloth (Zokin), Indian silk, new silk, Indigo dyed cloth (Aizome), tie-dyed cloth, early 20th century quilt pieces (front and back), and pompoms.
